For me, checking the domain’s history and how easy it is to remember made a big difference. I also pay more attention now to branding and whether the name fits the website’s target audience.

Two things changed how I pick them. Hyphens and numbers look harmless in a spreadsheet and then cost you every time someone has to say the name out loud or spell it down a phone line.

The bigger one is checking history before buying. A short clean-looking name can have been a link farm or a spam target years earlier, and that baggage comes with the domain. Wayback plus a quick look at whether the name has ever been indexed takes five minutes and has stopped me buying a couple of bad ones.

I used to care only about having short and catchy domains. Later, I realized that it’s much more important for a domain to be relevant, easy to spell, brandable, and have a good history. Now, I also consider how people will search for and remember the domain before buying it.

For me, the biggest change was realizing that a domain can sound great but still be difficult for users to remember, spell, or trust. Now I prioritize simplicity, brandability, and a name that clearly fits the long-term purpose of the website.
