I would like to know what makes you sign up to a blog, a website or a forum for the first time?
My website traffic comes from search engines, social networks, forums and book marketing sites...
and I need ways to convert it to real members?

Any suggestions

Hey Joe,

First of all, what type of site do you have? A blog, website, or forum; or all if the above.

There is a delicate handoff. You want to require you visitors to register/login before they can fully engage, but then again you want them ti be able to see enough content to be able to realize the value in your site.

You could try adding some free downloads, info, or other resources to members. Make sure you have a clear call to action so that visitors know of the offer, but dont make it too "spammy" looking with cheesy popups

What I used to do, and it worked well, was to show the guests content that they would feel attracted to, using clever titles for my content. I would use some kind of "Suggested Page" idea where they could keep reading posts they liked and by time they got through a couple of pages, they wanted to read more. Offering things that only registered users can use is another large way of getting them to actually register. Don't let guests see all of the content either, if they want to see it, they will register!

If I'm going to sign up on a forum, the staff needs to be professional, the community needs to look friendly, and the forum has to be active.

Hi

Well,i think it depends on users requirement what he is exactly looking for, where he wants to click. For example, why we do social bookmarking, forum postings etc because our requirement at that time is traffic so we look for those sites to sign up.
On the other side,It is sometimes about the sites popularity that makes you sign up. For example Facebook, twitter and so on.

Thank You

They have something I want or need that I can't get elsewhere.

This traffic may not be targeted, try running some targeted advertising and see how those visitors respond and interact.

What make me sign up, or has a big part in signing up, is the theme firstly. This is what grabs the users attention straight away and if it is good, that should be a pass. Most themes are fine to use if they are on some sort of marketplace. Look at reviews and see what other people have said about the theme you are looking at.

Another thing is the content that is on the website. If I see that there are things that I may be interested in, but it is available to member, then I will sign up to have a look. If the content is good, I will stay.

Another big thing for me is the community. If the community are having good discussions and enjoying themselves, then I will most likely enjoy myself.
