There is no doubt about it, backlink of a website is really very important to a website and you have to build quality backlink for better result, I would say.

Well , in my opinion, number of backlinks will not help anyway if the content of the pages and the site, to which the backlinks are linking, are not useful and of high quality. It will increase bounce rate and reduce site reputation. So , it is advisable to give priority to content first and then to quality backlink building.

I agree with DPat. Backlinks are needed by websites, yes. BUT, they cannot stand alone. Backlinks are nothing if the website itself has nothing good to offer.
