SSL is Best Encryption Technology, Which allows the user to use open the website in secured mode by using HTTPS. The Website based Business will be in need of tested and authenticated SSL to accept the secured user personal data and Financial credentials.
Where as Invalid or Unassigned SSL certificates causes the less traffic on website, leads some browsers to stops direct links on those websites by showcasing the fatal error on all the website pages.
Updates of SSL is important, as The authorized SSL will work on all the browsers and gains good traffic.

If you are collecting personal information such as address, credit card details etc. then it matters such as ecommerce sites on payment related pages ONLY... Otherwise there is absolutely no need for it... It is not a major ranking factor and as mentioned it is only applicable in certain scenarios relating to sensitive data capture...
