First things first. Are you talking about *nix flavored web
hosting or Windows. In either case, you should study up
on either linux or IIS as there is MUCH MORE to hosting than
simply setting up a VPS...

The website hosting industry is completely inundated right
now, so I'm not sure why you chose this avenue, however,
to each his own, you have every right to do whatever you
want, however, if you are completely green to hosting, I'd
strongly suggest you get set up with a low cost dedicated
server (with MANAGED services) so you can play around
with the technical stuff to get your feet wet...

Make sure it's "managed" so that when you mess something
up, and if you're real new to this, you WILL mess things up,
you can simply have the server reset back to default config
by the actual server company.

Suffice it to say, there really is SO much to learn that a mere
post on this forum will not help you in the slightest.

The best way to learn is by doing!

No one can tell you how to do it, because there are so many ways TO do it. Get a cheap VPS. Login with SSH and play around.

Read some info online, watch youTube videos, ready tutorials. Now repeat this process about 1,000 times until you feel like you can do it in your sleep, then learn a bunch more!

A cheap vps would be the best way to start out. Play around with it and read about how it works. Maybe install a couple of control panels and learn how they work too. Cpanel gives you a free 15 days to test it out so you can install it and learn how it works. Other panels are available out there too, some free some paid so you gotta be willing to invest a bit in really learning.
You can't really lose anything if you're learning new things, so give it a shot.

A lot depends on which OS you want. Once you decide that, you need to decide which distro (if Linux) and which version. Next step would be to spend some time reading the online documentation for that OS. :)

Or watch some videos and try to follow along. There are many "walk-you-through-it-step-by-step"
tutorials videos out there. I don't know about you, but I am a "hands on" learner overall. I learn best
being told, reading or watching something and then doing it myself until I can either ( A ) remember
it exactly or ( B ) remember where I found the info to refer back to later.

When I started learning server admin stuff (I used to run a hosting firm), I kept a log of EVERYTHING
including basic things like URL's of places that I could reference back to later.

One thing about the hosting industry, just like many, is that it is ever changing. Once you think you
have the knack of something, a newer version comes out and you gotta learn it all over again.

Which is why you NEED to get the basics down. Just like anything, as long as you know the basics,
the rest will fall in to place and even when newer versions come out, it will be a lot easier to learn
the differences.

Purchase one test VPS server and practice it for all basic settings, installations and configurations. You can check online help, you will find number of methods to perform one single task on server. Choose the easy way you think and practice. Google is really best friend of mine. You can always take help and learn from Google.
