SEO = Will subdomain penalty affect main website?

I see that there are some SEO experts here so I have a question that I have not been able to find a good answer for so I hope I can get the information I am looking for here..

If I have a website built on a subdomain that is completely separate from my main domain and website and the subdomain gets some kind of manual or algorithm penalty, will that penalty be transferred or otherwise hurt the main domain/website?

Hopefully not. As because search engine considers each sub-domain as separate sites. And nonetheless if they are interlinked through links and navigation.

Nothing is interlinked and other than the main domain that the subdomain is built on there is nothing connected at all.
