Both are highly sought after for business websites, though one not quite as popular as the other. The .CO TLD is technically a ccTLD representative of the country of Colombia in South America.

Colombia does not place geographic restrictions on who is able to purchase the .CO domain extension as has been the case with other country code Domain extensions. This has been instrumental in the widespread adoption of .CO. Not just seen as a suitable domain extension for a website to use, but also, in many cases, it is seen a quality replacement for .COM when it is unavailable.

.com is a top level domain (TLD) for commercial websites
.co is mostly used for country specific TLDs like co.in, co.jp, co.uk . It is also used for commercial websites. For example, vine.co, go.co

However, .com is more popular than .co site. If you tell someone your company's name is XYZ, they'll instinctively search for XYZ.com instead of XYZ.co. So every time you need to tell people that your website is a .co domain. I own a .co website and have faced this problem multiple times.

Like said above, .co is the top level domain that has been assigned to Columbia. .com on the other hand is more of a global top level domain and probably one of the most used one across the world wide web. I went on GoDaddy to see what the price differences are and it seems that the .co domain is quite cheap for the first year but extremely expensive after that (£26.99 per year). But because the .com domain is so popular, you can usually get some great deals for it from any domain registrar and it won't be as expensive when you have to renew the domain.

There could be some national conflicts with the .co domain. For instance, if someone in Mexico, a nation which also speaks Spanish, creates a site called Montana.co, then people might assume it's a Colombian site, when it's not. However, though, if English stuff is applied to .co, then that problem doesn't arise. For instance, mountain.co has no Spanish words.

Anyway, do you all feel this is a big deal? Has it sparked any controversy?

.CO is a address which was introduced to satisfy the need for short and memorable web addresses. It is a new domain extension that offers you a global option for branding your online presence. It is fresh, shorter and social. While on the other hand .COM is the legacy domain extension with more than 100 million registrations.

.com is always king when it comes to branding.a lot of tech companies opt for .co and io but thats because the .com is taken or comes at a steep price.the thing if many startups launch with the .co but then tend to go back to buy the .com after a few years

.COM(Commercial): .com is the most popular and commonly used type of top-level domain for businesses, websites, and email.

.CO(Colombia): is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Colombia country. Some sites also use .co for URL shortner.

co domain extension is more expensive than the .com, but they are both very affordable. The reason for the higher price is to deter domain name buyers from purchasing domains with the . co extension in bulk and not using them. This has become a problem with .com domain names and the higher price helps to make more .

.co and .com both very affordable. If you want the difference between .co and .com !!!

.co is the country code top-level domain and it's used in specific countries.
.com is a commercial website across the world.

.co is from country ccTLD, .com is generic.

If you are target the country, you should use .co.
However if you are targeting globally.

.COM is better and users usually remember more faster than .co

This thread is over 9 years old. Dot co is the country code for Columbia. Due to original marketing there were 100k registrations in first half hour of launch. The price has since skyrocketed for a dot co and is marketed as another tld. It is not limited to Columbian citizens. There have been a lot of generic keywords in dot co that have sold for high figures. Dot co is good for seo generic keyword to assist your brand but i wouldn't be branding with do co.
