Is Too Much SEO Optimization Hurting My Website?

Hi everyone,

I have a different type of question. Can too much SEO actually hurt a website?
I recently reviewed my content and realized I was over optimizing everything. Exact match keywords in headings, too many internal links, bold keywords everywhere, and strict keyword density.
Now I am thinking maybe this looks unnatural to search engines. Some of my pages are not ranking even though content quality is decent.
So I am confused. Should we focus less on technical perfection and more on natural writing?
Has anyone experienced ranking drops because of over optimization?

Yes, your website may suffer from over-optimisation.

The content may appear unnatural if you stuff internal links, use bold text excessively, force exact match keywords, or concentrate too much on keyword density. Helpful, user-focused content is given priority by search engines over flawlessly optimised pages.

User engagement and rankings may suffer if your writing comes across as robotic or repetitious.

The most effective strategy is:

* Write organically for readers first.

* Where appropriate, use keywords.

* Limit and keep internal links pertinent.

* Prioritise value and clarity over "SEO perfection".

Balance, not over-optimisation, is rewarded by modern SEO.

Yes, over-optimization can definitely trigger "keyword stuffing" filters and hurt your rankings because it makes the content feel unnatural and robotic. Shifting your focus toward natural writing and helpfulness usually leads to better long-term results than chasing a "perfect" technical score.

Focus on content. Logic comes first. Your most important and relevant material should be front and center on your webpage. You don’t need the Moz stuff — learn old-school SEO fundamentals and stick to them. Create real, original content. Keep ads under 20%, and negotiate with reputable sites to link back to your strongest assets.

I just found this board. I used to be active on DP and other forums, but I’ve recently returned to freelancing. It’s nice to be back in these conversations.

90% of what y'all do now for SEO is superfluous and a waste of your time. CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT. "modern SEO" is more for clout-chasers with no real content, just my opinion.

I’m looking for work — if anyone reading this needs help, let’s connect.
