Weird Backlinks

I did a backlink audit on one of my sites and found links to it from spammy websites and even some adult sites for asian porn. I do not know why this happened because the content on that site has nothing to do with anything about adult entertainment and I certainly didn't put them there myself. I have a feeling that these were put there as a result of sabotage. Can anyone speculate? How do I get rid of them or address the issue with Google? This never happened before.

Reason why I think it's sabotage is because I got several emails from Russian hackers asking if I accepted credit card payments and they "needed my help" to process payments for them. But I told them this is clearly a money-laundering scam and proceeded to ask them if they felt I was born yesterday, but with a harsher tone than I am stating here.

The best way to get rid of these backlinks is to disavow them. This is the normal issue that most of the webmaster faces. Its the internet world which you can't control everything, But certainly ignoring them.

I have to agree with SEOPub. Of course that is not unusual as he is a wizard when it comes to SEO.

I see them on occasion also, and pretty much ignore them unless they get into the high numbers.

Negative SEO is one of the worst thing that could happen to anyone in the industry but unfortunately I wouldn't agree with most of the above replies.. I've faced this same issue in the past (both for some of my niche affiliate sites and for clients of mine) and I can tell from experience that these can completely ruin your site (unless it is a well-established authoritative website that Google absolutely trusts like let's say the Huffington Post or similar..).

What you can (and should) do IMO is to first try and contact these sites and ask them to please remove the links pointing to your site. You might even offer to pay some amount if that might help (depending of the damage they make), if that doesn't help, you can use a tool like link detox (DTOX) which can be quite expensive but well worth it if you really value your site. At the end of the day, it all boils down to money - will neglecting this problem cause you substantial losses and will the investment in removing as many links as you can be smaller than those losses?

Last but not least, if all else fails, I would certainly disavow them in GWMT as vishwa has pointed, but I only do that once I give my best shot in removing as many of them as I can. You might as well try to contact Google and explain that you've been hit by a negative SEO and this in no way is manual spam action conducted by yourself.

Hope that helps,

ANT

That is just crazy ... never pay some site owner to remove a link, if you begin doing stuff like that you will start a process that will never end, you will have every nut in the world posting links to your site, looking to get paid to remove them.

There are many tools out there, both white hat and black hat that can take care of these types of links. I would work nicely with the white hat techniques to remove the links and disavow them and if they continued to be a problem, then some harsher measures may be in order. There are all kinds of ways to deal with these, but never pay a site owner to remove a link.

That is just insanity...

Yes, they are optimized for Penguin. Penguins always backslap.

An example can be seen here:
