Those are the same junky links people were parroting in 2016 and 2015 and 2014 and 2013... The only one I agree with is the directories, if you are talking about paid and well moderated directories.

The rest of those links are just low quality crap.

Excess everything is very bad. Link exchange can't bring penalty. But if you do it excessive link excahnging and Google notice that, then Google may slap your website. And it doesn't matter for Bing. Bing completely run the opposite algo. Screen-shot for you.

If you are talking about SEO in 2017, link exchange, blog commenting or classified submission don't really work anymore. In fact, none of these work for SEO anymore but yes, the others can help in socially promoting your brand.

Most of these SEO practices have pretty much been the staple for a while now.

Google's ever changing algorithm makes it hard to keep hitting the nail on the head with my overall SEO practices. I find SEO to be a whole lot of grunt work. And for the hours I put into it, the instant gratification is close to none (I know I know -- I'm impatient, and it builds up over time).

I run a blog (skipMBA.com) and have SEO optimized all my pages and posts. Because I'm within a very specific niche, I've been running ads on social media, and the response has been great! many of my users have started bookmarking certain posts/pages on my website. I find that ads have really been helping gain that initial traction.

I speak for myself here though, I'm not sure if it would work for every niche.

But it is difficult to find high authority blogs, where you can submit your guest post. Some social media channels also give back-links to the user.
