He is right!! You can use the Google Search Console to check your backlinks! But it won't show all the backlinks that are created for your website and ofcourse, it is not real-time.

To check back links of your website first you can sign up with google webmaster tool, then you should verify your website with html code, After that now you check your back links in the account click on Search traffic option, in that links to your site..Hare you get information about how many back links get and from which domains.

Google webmaster tool is the best for checking backlink and it is also free. In google search console under search traffic tab there is a sub tab named links to your sites, from here your all backlinks are listed. Besides, smallseotools, seoreviewtools are there.
