I have always been a cPanel user. I Would love to understand how to use a VPS and where I would go to learn the techniques?

There are many good guides on these posts

https://forumweb.hosting/16408-setting-up-a-vps-for-a-beginner.html
https://forumweb.hosting/14864-how-to-configure-a-vps.html
https://forumweb.hosting/16209-how-to-best-manage-a-vps.html

and where I would go to learn the techniques?
This hosting forum https://forumweb.hosting is the best place for you to learn how to manage your web hosting and you also can find a best hosting service for your websites.

Hope that helped.

You can always combine the cPanel software with the luxuries of VPS and install it. This can solve many issues caused by one-config-fits-all web hosting plans provided by larger web hosting providers.

Been there. You could just first learn to launch a VPS and access it using Putty or whatever terminal/software you want to use. After accessing installing programs is not easy in command line mode and you would surely start learning with editors like VI and NANO (later being easier). But you just have to start and eventually you will be able to setup your own server without cpanel. Go for centoswebpanel its easier.

VPS Hosting simulates the experience of a dedicated server even though you're still sharing the physical server with other users. Your web hosting provider installs a virtual layer on top of the operating system (OS) of the server using virtualization technology.

1. Learn How to Log into Your VPS via Secure Shell (SSH) Access
2. Update Your Server
3. Create a New User and Modify Its Privileges

4. Enable Public Key Authentication
5. Set Up a Firewall for Your VPS
