Do sub domains have any SEO value?

Hello,

I see more website using sub domain for their main pages instead of using their-domain[dot]com/sub-folder/ . I guess that sub domains have any SEO value or get high PR better than sub folder

Can you show suggestion about that ? or should I sub domain for my website to get good SEO value ?

Most of the site's sub domain and pages contain specific information related to their site and keyword that's why we are focusing on sub domain, for generating higher traffic from the web.
