Case 1/ If you use Autotranslation of a site then generally it was regarded as spam. Google can detect is quickly.
Case 2/ If you manually translate from a language to another language by yourself, check spelling and grammar, you could a newer version and much more higher quality thus it's has no problem in this case.

Matt Cutts explained in this video [URLnf="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDg2AGRGjLQ"]here[/URLnf]

Yes, if you use duplicate content in any of the manner, Google will detect easily and mark it as duplicate content. Then really it harms your website ranking.
Here are the possible things that you are looking that is.
1.) Content should be unique.
2.) Everything should be perfect in terms of grammar and spelling.

It's always a good idea to use a really good article spinner. THe one I use is amazing and only costs $50 a month

Using article spinner tools can use for article marketing or articles submission, it's no more worth if you are looking for good feedbacks from readers, even articles need to make more changes manually

Unless you edit them after translating, because it contains lots of grammatical errors.
And I would never recommend Article spinner for money sites, if it's for Article directories then it's alright. You may use AMR or Content Professor. :)

I don't believe that G will mark this as duplicate content - especially if the translation is manual (and not auto-translated).... In either case I would use the canonicalization tag so that you consolidate the link juice and give credit to one version - hence avoiding any algo issues... e.g. place this within the head section of your webpage:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.website.com/myarticle" />

which means that the www. version of your page takes credit versus the non www. version wrt consolidating the link juice coming to that page.... The same can apply to different language pages should you wish for one version to be ranked on the SERPs...

You can read more [URLnf="http://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization"]here[/URLnf].
