Would it be preferable to get a small number of backlinks on some quality websites or a large number of backlinks from normal sites in same niche?

Why in the world would you pick one or the other? Get a [URLnf="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=shit-ton"]shit-ton[/URLnf] (yes, that is an actual unit of measurement) of high quality links.

I cant understand what you mean by normal sites. There are only two types of sites.

1. Quality Websites: This kind of websites have lots of quality and relevant content regarding it's niche. The content are well written by industry experts and goes in-depth of the topic. For example: searchengineland.com, seroundtable.com etc. If you are from SEO or online marketing indsutry, you would like to get links from those websites.

2. Cheap Websites: This kind of website can have any kind of content which might or might not relevant to your niche. The content on the website also don't goes in-depth of the topic. they are just written for getting fresh content and getting ranked for lots of keywords. You should not get backlinks from those kind of websites.

So getting as many link as you can from quality websites will help you to get better traffic and ranking as well.

Quality is much better then quantity. Because if you have quality links with useful information then Google will consider it as good website and it will help your website to rank high. You also need to focus on content sharing.

Quality if you are trying to rank and stay on top for a long time on the other hand use quantity with churn n burn type of websites(ones that you wanna quick rank on top using little "blackhat" techniques but they wont stay for long there and will get deindexed)

Of course quality backlinks would give you better quality traffic, but getting backlinks from sites that have poorer quality will be easier. So I say, do both.
