Email Services… Google Apps, MS Exchange or Cpanel webmail… an open discussion

Who is using what for their clients and why? Any major problems? How was support? Uptime?

I'm with a creative marketing company who hosts most of our client sites as part of our services offered. Part of that is email hosting. We're finding a lot of our time goes into managing and trouble shooting email issues. We have a about 150 accounts, most of them on a Cpanel controlled server using the standard Cpanel webmail. We're considering pushing our clients into one Google or Exchange, hoping it will give less headaches for us and more reliability for the clients.

There are a few options availible for you, unless you're looking for an enterprise email solution I would steer clear of Exchange unless you are (1) purchasing email accounts from another provider and re-selling them; or (2) have a great deal of experience and training in setting up and maintaining Microsoft Exchange Server. Did I mention it can be pretty pricey too?

Next off we have Google, sure it is a great option, of corse there is the financial aspect behind it. In the end, with either option, unless you have the initial investment and experience, you'll need to be trusting another company with your customers emails..... What issues are you having with cPanel as per your mailing needs exactly?

For personal mail, I use Office 365 Business Pro (Exchange being part of that). I switched to that from Google Apps, mainly because I like Exchange. I further find the offering of the Office 365 plan rather good, and considering it also ships with the full Office suite (and with Outlook being my e-mail client of choice), it was simply a good fit.

Which e-mail solution works best depends heavily on what your usage is however. For simple e-mail services, as long as your provider is good, the built in functionality of Exim/whichever e-mail server they employ will likely do just fine.
