what type of hosting package should I choose ?

you will need a physical real firewall to really protect against DDos Attacks.

If you are on shared hosting then check with your hosting provider.
What you can do is install SiteLock on your website, take all safety measures that you can.

I believe that most websites have built in firewalls but you can also get bruteforce to protect cPanel
