Is that building email lists? social networking? or something else...?

There are few things you need to consider your website should be great bcoz its starting point of everything. focus small and medium sized companies know best customers and market directly to them. traffic and traffic sources matters but what important is turn those visitors into customers and make relationship with them. never relying on single marketing source bcoz of policy change. if you have a reputation for great value and strong customer satisfaction ie customer services then everything is good.
