I work on web design industry and my company usually adds some good pictures or photographs (besides color and typography) to make the design look better. The problem is, once the website has been done, the clients start change the high-quality pictures and photos with their own low-quality pictures or banners. I have to agree with most of the comments above. Lets be honest when a customer visits your web site the page presentation is the first impression they have of your business. First impressions are everything especially when you will probably never meet the majority of the people that visit your web site. So you want that first impression to be a very positive one.

That is not to say that you do not need good content, because the content will bring them back. So it is a double edged sword. You have to have a very good presentation to get them to look at the content but then the content itself will keep them coming back for more.
