At the beginning the most prefered gTLD was .com. AS the the time passes many alternative domains have been appeared including country domains like .ie or .us.

When projecting the future, is it still important to have a .com domain?

Who knows? Anything is possible... :D

Things that are important in yesterdays internet world are not that important anymore.
Ex: Directory submissions. Once upon a time we struggled to get into Yahho, DMOZ etc directories. Now people are saying directory submissions are dead.

So register the .tld based on your intention how to use the web site. On safeside.

Ex:
.com if you want to sell
.net for your network of web site or campanies.
.info for information sites.
Your local tld to promote your local business.

not really but it depents on your demand..

it generally say .com for commercial purpose
.org for kind of organizations
.info for for informatory
.gov for goverment organization

but as time elapsed domain selection became so critical name not available ..so more TLDs came in to existance with in more particular for each and every organizations as there own for example .club .tv etc etc
